Nigeria’s political landscape is set for a decisive legal moment as the Supreme Court prepares to hear an appeal filed by David Mark over the leadership crisis within the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The hearing, scheduled for April 14, follows a contentious Court of Appeal ruling that has intensified divisions within the party.
Mark is asking the apex court to halt the enforcement of that judgment while his appeal is being considered. He is also seeking to prevent the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from recognizing or implementing any leadership changes in the party until the matter is resolved.
At the same time, a parallel legal challenge by Nafiu Bala—who is contesting Mark’s position as national chairman—will be heard at the Federal High Court in Abuja on the same day. The case is being presided over by Justice Emeka Nwite, adding another layer of complexity to the dispute.
Other key figures named in the suit include Rauf Aregbesola and Ralph Nwosu, highlighting the high stakes within the party’s leadership struggle.
Legal analysts suggest the lower court may defer to the Supreme Court proceedings, given judicial hierarchy. As both factions seek legitimacy ahead of the 2027 general elections, the outcome of these cases could significantly shape the future of the ADC.
