The Nigerian Army has issued a strong warning to its personnel over the use of social media, saying careless online activity could threaten national security and military operations.
Speaking in Kaduna, Chief of Army Staff Waidi Shaibu cautioned soldiers against sharing sensitive information or engaging recklessly on digital platforms. He said such actions could damage the image of the army and compromise operational effectiveness.
The army chief urged senior officers and Regimental Sergeant Majors to lead by example by enforcing discipline, mentoring younger soldiers, and promoting professionalism within the ranks. He described mentorship as a key factor in building a stronger and more combat-ready force.
Adding to the warning, Provost Marshal Mathias Erebulu stated that soldiers who violate military regulations on social media use risk facing punishment. He instructed commanders to return to their units and educate troops on the dangers and consequences of social media abuse.
The development highlights growing concerns within the military over digital security and information management as security operations continue across the country.
