Troops from the Nigerian Army School of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering (NASEME) have apprehended 58 individuals suspected of engaging in illegal mining activities in Edo State. The arrests took place at a gold mining site located in the Ososo area of Akoko-Edo Local Government Area.
According to Captain Kennedy Anyanwu, Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, the operation was carried out on March 28, 2026, following credible intelligence. The suspects were taken into custody during a routine patrol aimed at tackling illegal mining and related criminal activities in the region.
The military confirmed that the operation was executed without resistance, and all suspects have since been transferred to the Okpella Police Division for further investigation and necessary legal action. Authorities say the move is part of broader efforts to strengthen security and curb unlawful economic activities across Edo State.
