Nigeria’s electoral body, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has announced that its planned nationwide voter revalidation exercise will no longer take place before the 2027 general elections.
The decision followed a high-level meeting between the Commission and Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) on April 10, 2026, where the proposal was carefully reviewed before being deferred.
INEC explained that while the voter revalidation exercise remains an essential process for strengthening the credibility of the National Register of Voters, its implementation will now occur after the upcoming general elections.
The Commission noted that the exercise is designed to verify voter records, correct personal information, remove duplicate or ineligible entries, and ensure the overall accuracy of the voter database. It also provides registered voters the opportunity to confirm and update their details.
Despite the postponement, INEC reaffirmed its commitment to delivering transparent, inclusive, and credible elections, assuring Nigerians that all necessary steps are being taken to safeguard the integrity of the electoral process.
The announcement was signed by Mohammed Kudu Haruna, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee.
