Senator Victor Umeh has pushed back against speculation surrounding a recent meeting between Peter Obi and Rotimi Amaechi, insisting it was merely part of ongoing political consultations rather than any arrangement for either figure to withdraw from the 2027 presidential contest.
Speaking during an interview on Arise Television, Umeh described the narrative suggesting a step-down agreement as inaccurate. He emphasized that the interaction between the two politicians reflected normal engagement among opposition figures seeking common ground ahead of the elections.
According to the lawmaker, such consultations are inevitable in a competitive political environment where multiple aspirants share similar ambitions. He noted that dialogue remains essential if opposition leaders are to streamline their choices and present a unified front.
Umeh also weighed in on the role of Atiku Abubakar, suggesting the former vice president should consider stepping aside to allow a new generation of leaders to emerge. While acknowledging Atiku’s longstanding influence, he argued that evolving voter expectations demand fresh ideas and leadership.
He stressed that the opposition’s success will depend largely on its ability to align with the needs and aspirations of Nigerians rather than individual political ambitions. Warning of the strength of the ruling party, Umeh said only a clear, people-focused alternative can effectively challenge the current administration.
