High Chief Peter Ameh, the Kogi East National Democratic Congress (NDC) Senatorial Candidate for the 2027 general election, has cautioned Nigerians and political stakeholders against celebrating the recent court judgment affecting the David Mark-led National Working Committee (NWC) and nullifying Atiku Abubakar’s candidacy.
Ameh described the development as a warning to all political actors, arguing that judicial decisions capable of altering political leadership structures and candidacies should not be celebrated merely because they appear to favour one political camp over another.
In a statement reacting to the judgment, Ameh urged Nigerians to look beyond immediate political gains and consider the broader implications for democratic participation, political pluralism and the future of opposition politics in the country.
“Do not celebrate this judgment just because it hurts the other side,” Ameh said, warning that the same forces capable of dismantling one political leadership structure or invalidating a candidate’s position could potentially be deployed against another political group when circumstances change.
According to him, political affiliation does not guarantee protection against political or institutional developments that could undermine democratic participation.
He further argued that the All Progressives Congress (APC), as the perceived ultimate beneficiary of the judgment, could gain politically from a weakened opposition, regardless of the political party affected.
“The APC will be happy keeping any party in the opposition weakened. They do not care which party logo you wave. They want us fighting each other so we never notice the real game being played against all of us,” Ameh stated.
Calls for Vigilance and Credible Elections
Ameh maintained that the judgment should not be viewed as a victory for any political faction but rather as a development that calls for greater vigilance among Nigerians and political stakeholders.
He stressed that the country’s democratic interests should take precedence over partisan considerations, warning that political divisions could distract citizens from broader governance challenges.
“What we should all glamour for is that a free, fair and credible election must be conducted by INEC,” he said.
The NDC senatorial candidate emphasised that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) must ensure that electoral processes are transparent, credible and conducted in accordance with the law.
He argued that the legitimacy of Nigeria’s democratic institutions depends significantly on the ability of electoral authorities to guarantee a level playing field for all political parties and candidates.
Ameh Criticises APC Government
The Kogi East senatorial candidate also used the opportunity to criticise the APC-led government, accusing it of failing to deliver good governance to Nigerians.
Ameh described the administration’s record as unsatisfactory and called for collective political action to bring an end to the party’s continued rule.
“For 11 years, this APC government has failed to provide good governance to Nigerians. We must collectively work to bring an end to its rule. APC is the problem,” he declared.
He urged Nigerians to remain politically conscious and resist attempts to allow partisan rivalries to overshadow the broader national interest.
Ameh concluded that the current political development should serve as a reminder that the protection of democracy requires vigilance, unity and a commitment to credible elections, rather than celebrations over the perceived misfortune of political opponents.
